Decided to try something new for the new year? Theatre can be an inexpensive experience, gift and overall a great evening for enjoying yourself. Whether you wish to attend alone or with someone else, London is hidden with beautiful gems of small theatres away from the bright lights of the West End. Though they do not hold any less value, these are some of my favourite theatres to visit for incredible and reasonably priced performances:
Situated in Shepherds Bush, this is one of my favourite theatres, with it’s beautiful architectural structure inside and out. Bush Theatre is a must visit in 2018 regardless of what time of year you’re planning on attending. Their programme for 2018 includes an exciting lineup and predominately promotes incredible talented actors/actress and writers across the UK.
The set up here is incredible for intimate performances making sure you don’t miss out on anything. The Bush Theatre is easy access to reach from both Shepherds Bush Market and Shepherds Bush station so get planning you route!
When I first discovered this gem last year I was thoroughly impressed, located in Victoria you get all the aesthetic feels of a classical of a West End theatre. Though I’m not surprised by the location of this theatre. The waiting area pre-show offers a cute place to take a seat, read a book and grab a coffee before the show starts.
If you want to make the most of the area, why not plan book matinee show and stroll around the sites with Buckingham Palace, St James’ Park not far there’s sure to be time for a picnic too.
Situated in east London, this is another no frills theatre but what you’ll be guaranteed is a good time. I absolutely love this venue due to it’s simplistic style and nature. My first visit was during the summer time which again was a beautiful time of year to visit to get the full experience of what The Yard has to offer, making it a perfect summer hotspot if you want to go mix quirky dinner and drinks with a cheeky trip to the theatre.
The Yard is definitely recommended if you wish looking for something different s
The only North London theatre to make my list, but nonetheless Almeida Theatre deserves it’s spot for a variety of reasons. Since I rarely ever travel to this part of London proves that Almeida Theatre is special. Another theatre that provides amazingly discounted tickets to those under 25 from £5 to £10, you have no excuse to moan and winge about the how expensive theatre is (make sure you sign up to their mailing list to be sure not to miss out on a single offer!).
Almeida is a great theatre for representation, from showcasing theatre from under 18s in a realistic and interesting manner their programme never shys away from current affairs and keeping in touch with the latest trends and topics.
Last and by means least, Theatre Royal Stratford East is my local and one of my favourites for several reasons. When I got the email announcing their full 2018 programme I was excited. Stratford Royal Theatre never disappoints for several reasons. Whether you’re passing by after shopping in Westfield Stratford City, the theatre doors doors to Theatre Royal Stratford East is a great place if you want to see fresh and inspiring talent in a beautifully crafted style and theatre.
Concession tickets are available to anyone under 26, and an promising new scheme of £5 limited tickets for first time visitors who live or work in Newham (proof of address required) with a maximum of 2 per person. Though their old scheme allowed cheaper tickets and no restriction of first time visitors, it’s a great step in the right direction to encourage people under 26 to attend theatre especially activities for Newham Residents and you can no doubt bring a friend along! An excellent bargain for fantastic theatre performances. This year I’m particularly excited to see Shebeen – winner of the Alfred Fagon Best New Play of the Year award!
