Lunch with Levi Roots

Last week I spent the afternoon with Levi Roots.

How did this all come about? I’ll tell you here…

In preparation for the new year and to somehow connect myself with more bloggers I decided to research into some upcoming events. I was gutted I missed out on Girl Boss event, hosted by Maya Jama a few months earlier. I’d also wanted to try new things particularly on my own which is one of my goals for 2017 (at one point next year I will travel solo abroad). So anyways I came across ‘Caribbean Bloggers Meet Up Week

Usually these things seem too good to be true, but I signed up anyways…

The London date was 10th December 2016, and hosted by the lovely Ursula Barzey, founder of the Caribbean travel and luxury blog CaribbeanandCo.com. Luckily I live locally to Stratford, so I didn’t have to travel for a long amount of time but I was nervous. Who will be there? What will I be expected to do and/or say? Why didn’t I print any business cards earlier. All I had with me was my phone and sisters camera. I even attempted to vlog the first half of the journey but yet again my nerves got the better of me. As I arrived at the Smokehouse, I was greeted by a friendly face who turned out to be Ursula. She was welcoming and extremely friendly. There were a few more bloggers there but I had enough time to snap the empty surroundings of the restaurant before we were introduced her blog is focused on promoting Caribbean travel and its expanding luxury lifestyle to potential visitors from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The blog also encourages inter-regional travel.

We were given a mixture of starters and mains to try and for the first time I was actually stepping outside of my comfort zone and trying new foods. I’m one of the fussiest eaters you’ll probably come across, and although I have Caribbean heritage I don’t eat all Caribbean foods so this was refreshing for me.

Calypso Rum Cake – ‘Freshly warmed rum cake with raisin and butterscotch sauce. Served with vanilla bean ice-cream‘ (£4.90)

This was my favourite part of the whole meal. Oh my gosh, everytime I look at this image my mouth waters and I want to go back and grab another piece (thank God for UberEats and my constant craving for Brownies!!) If you’re like me and not a typical rum cake lover, then this dessert is for you. If unlike me you love typical Jamaican rum cakes this dessert is for you too which is the beauty of this dessert.
